Triple A expects an increase in travel this Labor Day weekend

Triple A says ten-percent more people will be traveling this Labor Day weekend compared to last year. More than 34-million travelers will be on the roads and flying to their destinations beginning Thursday and continuing into next Monday. In Illinois nearly two million people are expected to travel. Spokesperson Beth Mosher says Americans don’t appear to be holding back on travel expenses even though there are signs the economy is slowing.

MOSHER: Labor Day tends to be a  holiday that's the last major weekend before summer ends. It's a long weekend. People want to take advanatge of that either before the kids go back to school or before the weather starts to get colder. So it's a holiday of backyard barbeques and one last time to go see family and friends.

Mosher says travel agents don’t feel they are out of the woods yet because the number of people traveling is still not where it was before the recession hit. Airfares are expected to increase ten percent over the holiday weekend from last year. Gas prices are up eleven cents.
