The Illinois Department of Transportation is moving forward on the Illinois Route 8 reconstruction project. The department announced the completion of the Sunnyland portion of road Monday, and at the same time broke ground on another portion of the road to be reconstructed. Elected officials and U-S Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood were also on hand for the event. The Sunnyland area is shared between East Peoria and Washington. The neighborhood has seen many businesses leave. East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says the redevelopment of Illinois Route 8 is expected to bring economic development back.
MINGUS: Studies have already indicated that there are certain businesses that will will re-locate or locate here based on the traffic flow and the ability to have access in and out. It's already a fact.
Mingus says at least one business has already committed to locating in the Sunnyland area. The Illinois Route 8 reconstruction project goes from East Peoria to Washington. The next portion of the project will include the East Peoria side of the road and the expansion of Summit Street.
