EPA: Illinois River Study Needs Resident Input

The Environmental Protection Agency wants residents to share input on possible Illinois River pollutant sources. The E-P-A says parts of the Illinois River from Lasalle to Pekin have levels of fecal coliform bacteria and other pollutants above the legal limit. Jennifer Clarke is with the Illinois E-P-A. She says residents and farmers can voluntarily reduce pollutants:

CLARKE: We can’t tell farmers you must put filtration strips in your field so we don’t have as much erosion. So what we do is we get out there and educate the public and get the word out that ‘Hey your water is not clean and we hope there are some things you can do in the water shed to reduce that.

Clarke says the E-P-A is asking people who live in the Illinois River Valley to submit suggestions on pollution sources before the end of the year. She says E-P-A officials will put the information into a plan that will be shared as a way to reduce erosion and pollutants in the Illinois River watershed.
