THE BANJOS ARE COMING!!!  THE BANJOS ARE COMING!!!

This sounds similar to an alert the Colonists were given back in the 1700’s when our country was being invaded by a foreign country. Our country was alerted to take arms to fight. However, this new alert, ”THE BANJOS ARE COMING!!!, THE BANJOS ARE COMING!!!” is not an alert to take arms.

This alert is to let you know Peoria is going to be invaded by banjos and other musical fretted instruments. You are all requested to rally in the downtown area July 15 thru the 18.

The CENTRAL ILLINOIS BANJO CLUB is, again, hosting the annual FRETTED INSTRUMENT GUILD of AMERICA NATIONAL CONVENTION. The Fretted Instrument Guild of America members are players of fretted instruments of all kinds, but predominantly banjos.   It will be held at Hotel Pere Marquette on Wednesday thru Saturday, July 15 thru 18. For the conventioneers some tours of points of interest around Peoria are scheduled. Friday is a FIGA Board of Directors meeting. On Saturday a FIGA General Membership meeting will take place.   Many workshops are scheduled throughout Friday and Saturday. A Saturday ladies’ luncheon and shopping are planned.

AND NOW FOR YOU, THE PUBLIC. Throughout the four days there will be outside jam sessions at various businesses downtown. Anytime, day and night, there are jamming sessions going on, almost continuously, at the Hotel Pere Marquette.

WEDNESDAY:

A scheduled activity for Wednesday is a jam session at Kouri’s Pub on Sterling Ave. at 7pm.

THURSDAY:

A Spirit of Peoria cruise and jam session on the Illinois River is scheduled at 2pm.  Cost is $15. Seating is limited to conventioneers first, then the public. Get there early.

A concert at the hotel at 7pm. Cost is $10. The Central Illinois Banjo Club will be first to perform this evening followed by many great, some the world’s best, performers.

FRIDAY:

A Brown Bag-It concert will be held at the Peoria Court House Plaza. Conventioneers will march down Main Street at 11am. The concert begins at 11:30am until 1pm. This is free to the public.

Again, a concert at the hotel at 7pm. Participants will be different from those performing on Thursday night. Cost is $10.

SATURDAY:

A concert at the hotel at 7:30pm. Again, some of the participants will vary from the first two evening concerts.  Tickets can be purchased at the door or call 309-367-4660.

This 2009 convention being hosted by the Central Illinois Banjo Club and is co-chaired by Denny and Kathy Overstreet and John and Linda Dystrup.  The Central Illinois hosted the Fretted Instrument Guild of America Convention in 2003. Conventioneers came from 38 states, plus Canada, France and Germany, the best in the world.  This is why we send out this alert; THE BANJOS ARE COMING!!!  THE BANJOS ARE COMING!!!
